How Literacy and Cultural Celebrations Shape Holistic Learners at SMMIS

Literacy in Action: Bridging the Generations

One of the highlights of our school literacy programme are our Buddy Reading events. There is something truly special about watching our Secondary students sit on the floor, next to our little ones, patiently guiding through a tricky sentence.

This initiative is about far more than just decoding words. For our younger learners, it provides a relatable role model and a safe space to build reading stamina. For our older students, it fosters leadership and empathy. This cross-school connection ensures that literacy is viewed not as a solitary task, but as a shared, communal joy that binds our SMMIS family together.

Book Week: A Global Literary Feast

Our annual Book Week serves as a brilliant microcosm of the SMMIS ethos. This year, we are privileged to host a diverse array of guest authors who bring the curriculum to life. By inviting storytellers from the local Singaporean community, the broader International circuit, and the Jewish community, we provided our students with a 360-degree view of contemporary literature.

  • Local Perspectives: Hearing from Singapore-based authors helped students see their own environment reflected in professional prose.
  • Global Voices: International authors expanded our horizons, bringing tales from distant corners of the globe.
  • Jewish Heritage: Our visiting Jewish authors deepened our connection to our roots, showing how ancient traditions continue to inspire modern storytelling.

The Power of "Windows and Mirrors"

We subscribe to the philosophy that books should be both mirrors (where students see their own lives reflected) and windows (where they look into the lives of others).

Building the "Whole Child"

A holistic learner is someone who can connect the dots between the classroom and the wider community. By grounding our literacy programme in the rich cultural soil of Singapore and our unique international identity, we foster:

  1. Empathy: Engaging with diverse narratives helps students understand perspectives different from their own.
  2. Confidence: Through events like Book Week, students find the courage to share their own voices.
  3. Critical Literacy: Students learn to question and compare different cultural narratives - a vital skill in our modern world.

"Reading is a conversation. All books talk. But a good book listens as well." -Mark Haddon

Looking Ahead

At SMMIS, we believe that a child who can"read the word" and "read the world" is a child prepared for the future. Whether it is through a shared moment during Buddy Reading oran inspiring workshop with a visiting author, literacy remains our most powerful tool for building a harmonious, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment.

Join the Conversation: Literacy at Home

Our efforts at SMMIS are only half the story. The most successful holistic learners are those who see literacy as a natural part of their home life. To support our mission of building a culture of reading, we invite you to:

  • Ask about the 'Buddies': If your child is in Primary, ask them what they read with their Secondary school buddy this week. If they are in Secondary, ask them how they helped their younger peer.
  • Share your own stories: Research shows that children who see their parents reading for pleasure are far more likely to become lifelong readers themselves.
  • Visit the library together: Singapore is home to some of the world’s finest public libraries. Why not make a family trip to explore the diverse range of Singaporean and international authors we’ve discussed during Book Week?
